Reflecting on Mental Illness

“This was my third year participating in 46Climbs but it was the first time that I really let myself reflect on mental illness. It was an incredibly moving experience and I let myself fully acknowledge every emotion I felt during the hike. Having spent the last year recovering from a physical injury and facing my own battles with mental health over the years, I felt incredibly accomplished. If I can hike 33 miles and summit 7 peaks, I can find the strength to get out of bed in the morning. I also met some incredible people who inquired about the event and gave me a chance to relay the importance of ending the stigma. There were two older women who affirmed me and my hiking partner, telling us to always remember how strong, resilient, and bad we are. It was an overall beautiful and impactful experience.” – Meg Desmond
